{"id":37029,"date":"2023-02-27T19:06:23","date_gmt":"2023-02-28T00:06:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/test.greenmoney.com\/2025\/?p=37029"},"modified":"2023-02-28T03:53:23","modified_gmt":"2023-02-28T08:53:23","slug":"rei-will-ban-forever-chemicals-from-clothes-and-cookware-in-2024","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.greenmoney.com\/2025\/rei-will-ban-forever-chemicals-from-clothes-and-cookware-in-2024\/","title":{"rendered":"REI will ban \u2018forever chemicals\u2019 from clothes and cookware in 2024"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"landing-links\"><a href=\"\/\">&gt;&gt; Back to March 2023 Issue<\/a><\/div>\n<h5>Above photo: Spencer Platt\/Getty Images<\/h5>\n<h3><em>The announcement is \u201cyet another nail in the coffin for PFAS.\u201d<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After more than a year of pressure from environmental groups, the major outdoor retailer REI\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/newsroom\/article\/rei-co-op-raises-bar-for-companies-operating-in-outdoor-industry\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced on Tuesday<\/a>\u00a0that it will ban hazardous \u201cforever chemicals\u201d from its clothing and cookware by fall 2024.<\/p>\n<p>REI\u2019s new\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/assets\/stewardship\/sustainability\/rei-product-impact-standards\/live.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">product standards<\/a>\u00a0will require its suppliers to eliminate all per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, or PFAS, from the pots, pans, apparel, shoes, bags, packs, and similar gear sold by the retail chain. Suppliers of heavy-duty apparel like professional-grade raincoats will have until 2026 to make those products PFAS-free.<\/p>\n<p>Mike Schade, a program director for the nonprofit Toxic-Free Future, told Grist the decision would <em>\u201cdrive yet another nail in the coffin for PFAS.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>PFAS are a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/grist.org\/article\/what-are-pfas-and-why-are-people-freaking-out-about-them\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">class of over 9,000 human-made chemicals<\/a>\u00a0whose nonstick and water-repellent properties have made them useful in an array of consumer products, from outdoor clothing to pans to firefighting foam. These substances don\u2019t break down naturally in the environment \u2014\u00a0hence the name \u201cforever chemicals\u201d \u2014\u00a0and have been detected in the bloodstream of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.niehs.nih.gov\/health\/topics\/agents\/pfc\/index.cfm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">97 percent<\/a>\u00a0of Americans and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2023\/02\/22\/climate\/pfas-forever-chemicals-wildlife-animals.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hundreds of wild animal species worldwide<\/a>. While\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/grist.org\/accountability\/epa-will-regulate-forever-chemicals-experts-say-not-enough\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">regulators<\/a>\u00a0are still looking into the full health implications of PFAS, the chemicals have already been linked to serious human health problems\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/dceg.cancer.gov\/research\/what-we-study\/pfas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">including cancer and liver damage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"visibility-wrapper-970-to-300\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1652553476095-0\"><script>\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1652553476095-0'); });\n<\/script><\/div>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1622053269469-0\" class=\"ad-float-left\"><script>\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1622053269469-0'); });\n<\/script><\/div>\n<div class=\"ad-float-left\">Over the past several years, retailers and manufacturers around the world \u2014 including, most recently,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/grist.org\/accountability\/3m-pfas-stop-legal-battles\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Fortune 500 company 3M<\/a>\u00a0\u2014 have pledged to stop producing PFAS and phase them out of the products they sell. But other companies, like REI, have been perceived as slow to respond. Since September 2021, REI has been the target of a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/toxicfreefuture.org\/mind-the-store\/rei-ban-pfas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">national campaign<\/a>\u00a0urging it to set a concrete timeline for eliminating forever chemicals, not only from its private-label products but from other brands\u2019 clothing that it sells in its stores.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Schade said not doing so was inconsistent with REI\u2019s branding as an environmental champion. <em>\u201cPFAS leaves behind a toxic trail of pollution,\u201d<\/em> he told Grist. He cited widespread\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pfasproject.com\/decatur-alabama\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drinking water<\/a>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.northcarolinahealthnews.org\/2022\/03\/19\/pfas-found-in-cumberland-county-wells-25-miles-from-chemours\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">contamination<\/a>\u00a0from PFAS\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.haleyaldrich.com\/resources\/articles\/textile-manufacturing-and-pfas-three-phases-of-risk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">production facilities<\/a>\u00a0across the United States, as well as problems further downstream, when PFAS shear off waterproof clothing. PFAS can also\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/society\/2021\/aug\/31\/pfas-toxic-forever-chemicals-air-breathing\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">muck up indoor air quality<\/a>\u00a0in homes and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/es102384z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stores<\/a>, wafting into the air from treated products like clothing.<\/p>\n<p>Prior to this week\u2019s total ban, REI\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rei.com\/stewardship\/sustainable-product-practices\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">stated<\/a>\u00a0that it aimed to \u201cexpand\u201d the use of PFAS alternatives and that it didn\u2019t use two of the most common forever chemicals \u2014 called PFOA and PFOS. It was, however, using newer, so-called \u201cshort-chain\u201d PFAS where \u201cviable alternatives\u201d did not yet exist. (Some of REI\u2019s competitors, including Jack Wolfskin and Fjallraven, say they\u2019ve\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/grist.org\/health\/outdoor-industry-ditches-forever-chemicals-rei-pfas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">already completed the transition<\/a>\u00a0to these alternative technologies, which could include options like polyurethane, a kind of plastic material, or brand-name chemical treatments like Empel that market themselves as environmentally friendly.) Critics were quick to point out that these short-chain versions are not necessarily any safer than longer-chain forms of PFAS. And a recent\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/toxicfreefuture.org\/research\/pfas-in-stain-water-resistant-products-study\/results\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">independent test<\/a>\u00a0of REI apparel found both short- and (the allegedly banned) long-chain forms of PFAS.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Meanwhile, REI and other clothing companies are being driven to act by legal pressure \u2014 particularly in\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/equilibrium-sustainability\/3798461-new-york-to-ban-forever-chemicals-from-clothing-by-end-of-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">New York<\/a>, where a recently enacted law bans PFAS from most apparel by the end of this year. The law is expected to create a national standard, since companies are unlikely to create separate, PFAS-free product lines just for the Empire State.
