Fossil fuels are a primary ingredient in the eye-popping economic growth of the past two centuries, but the cost of burning them wasn\u2019t originally factored into the equation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Increasingly, that\u2019s changing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Institutional investors across the globe are taking stock of natural capital, which national economies and investors have historically neglected.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Investing in natural capital \u2014 the value extracted from soil, air, water, climate and all the living things and ecosystem services that make the economy possible \u2014 has long made environmental sense. Examples include advancing sustainable hydroponics, beef alternatives, biodegradable consumer products or degraded land restoration.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But investors are increasingly seeing the economic rationale, too. The World Economic Forum\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/press.un.org\/en\/2022\/dsgsm1798.doc.htm#:~:text=Investing%20in%20biodiversity%20makes%20both,nearly%20400%20million%20new%20jobs.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estimates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0that protecting nature and protecting biodiversity could generate $10 trillion annually in business opportunities, from farming to fashion to finance, creating nearly 400 million new jobs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The question is how, exactly, all this happens. The year ahead could provide some answers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A key stepping stone is the ongoing development of the recommendations of the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tnfd.global\/about\/#who\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0(TNFD), due in fall 2023. The TNFD framework is meant to bridge the information gap that exists between financial institutions and companies \u2014 in this case, providing the information needed to understand how nature-related risks impact financial performance.<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"visibility-wrapper-970-to-300\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1652553476095-0\"><script>\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1652553476095-0'); });\n<\/script><\/div>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1622053269469-0\" class=\"ad-float-left\"><script>\n    googletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1622053269469-0'); });\n<\/script><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The International Finance Corporation\u2019s (IFC)\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifc.org\/wps\/wcm\/connect\/publications_ext_content\/ifc_external_publication_site\/publications_listing_page\/biodiversity-finance-reference-guide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biodiversity Finance Reference Guide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, launched in 2022, which builds on the International Capital Market Association\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icmagroup.org\/assets\/documents\/Sustainable-finance\/2022-updates\/Green-Bond-Principles_June-2022-280622.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">green bond<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.icmagroup.org\/assets\/documents\/Regulatory\/Green-Bonds\/LMA_Green_Loan_Principles_Booklet-220318.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">green loan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0principles, launched in 2014 and 2018 respectively, also serves as a key stepping stone.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe World Economic Forum estimates that protecting nature and protecting biodiversity could generate $10 trillion annually in business\u00a0opportunities, from farming to fashion to finance, creating nearly 400 million new jobs.\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The IFC\u2019s guide provides investors an overview of the types of investments that support natural capital. It is one of several organizations and collaborations working globally on some aspect of valuing nature for companies, including the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/capitalscoalition.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Capitals Coalition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sustainable-markets.org\/ncia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Natural Capital Investment Alliance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and the\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unepfi.org\/natural-capital-protocol-finance-sector-supplement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>So where\u2019s the money?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2020, the OECD\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\/environment\/resources\/biodiversity\/report-a-comprehensive-overview-of-global-biodiversity-finance.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">estimated<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0biodiversity finance from all sources to total between $78 billion and $91 billion per year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And as of this writing, the largest investment strategy with a healthy ecosystems theme was the nearly half-billion-dollar-and-growing Fidelity Select Environment and Alternative Energy fund (FSLEX), although similar funds are poised to expand greatly across North America, EMEA and APAC throughout the coming year.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1622053479374-0\" class=\"ad-float-left\"><script>\ngoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1622053479374-0'); });\n<\/script><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As major investment firm leadership at the likes of Schroder\u2019s, Aviva and RobecoSAM have become vocal about the role biodiversity plays in their funds\u2019 strategies and holdings, it\u2019s safe to expect some of the billions invested with a dual mandate on climate \u2014 that is, simultaneously seeking returns and climate impact \u2014 will increasingly be informed by biodiversity mandates, too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That the financial sector has begun to realize that nature\u2019s economic value is wholly dependent on a healthy climate may sound eye roll-worthy to some in the climate community, but this fact says more about the financial system\u2019s lack of consideration for the value of natural resources than it does a lack of investor ambition. Regardless, the estimated\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/press.un.org\/en\/2022\/dsgsm1798.doc.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">$10 trillion dollar investment opportunity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0is likely to become a focusing factor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The practical upshot: There is no path to decarbonization without major investments in natural capital.
