The $16.6 trillion in ESG incorporation assets they represent is a nearly 43 percent increase over the $11.6 trillion in such assets identified in 2018.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Of this 2020 total:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> $4.6 trillion were managed on behalf of individual investors, and $12.0 trillion were identified as managed on behalf of institutional investors as shown in <\/span><b>Figure B<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30810 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/test.greenmoney.com\/2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Sustainable-Investing-Assets-2020-Fig-B-US-SIF-Foundation.png\" alt=\"Figure B-Sustainable Investing Assets 2020-Fig B-US SIF Foundation\" width=\"750\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/test.greenmoney.com\/2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Sustainable-Investing-Assets-2020-Fig-B-US-SIF-Foundation.png 750w, https:\/\/test.greenmoney.com\/2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Sustainable-Investing-Assets-2020-Fig-B-US-SIF-Foundation-300x160.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 750px) 100vw, 750px\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> $3.1 trillion \u2014 19 percent \u2014 were managed through registered investment companies such as mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, variable annuities and closed-end funds, as shown in <\/span><b>Figure C<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> $716 billion \u2014 4 percent \u2014 were managed through alternative investment vehicles, such as private equity and venture capital funds, hedge funds and property funds.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> $266 billion in assets were managed by community investing institutions.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> $985 billion in money manager ESG assets were managed through other commingled funds.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The majority \u2014 $11.5 trillion, or 69 percent \u2014 remains largely opaque as they were managed through undisclosed investment vehicles and the managers for 60 percent of these undisclosed vehicles \u2014 $6.9 trillion \u2014 also did not disclose the specific ESG factors that they consider, reporting only that they consider ESG in general.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-30820\" src=\"https:\/\/test.greenmoney.com\/2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Figure-C-Money-Manager-Assets-by-Type-Incorporating-ESG-Criteria-2020.png\" alt=\"Figure C-Money Manager Assets-by Type-Incorporating ESG Criteria 2020-US SIF\" width=\"280\" height=\"655\" srcset=\"https:\/\/test.greenmoney.com\/2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Figure-C-Money-Manager-Assets-by-Type-Incorporating-ESG-Criteria-2020.png 325w, https:\/\/test.greenmoney.com\/2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Figure-C-Money-Manager-Assets-by-Type-Incorporating-ESG-Criteria-2020-128x300.png 128w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 280px) 100vw, 280px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In terms of assets, money managers incorporate ESG factors fairly evenly across environmental, social and governance categories, as shown in <\/span><b>Figure D, above<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Overall, in asset-weighted terms, money managers incorporated social factors slightly more than environmental and governance criteria. Social criteria incorporation by money managers increased 49 percent from 2018 to $16.1 trillion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Environmental criteria as a whole grew faster than social or governance factors over the past two years, increasing 57 percent, from $10.1 trillion to nearly $16.0 trillion.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Among all specific ESG criteria, governance factors related to <\/span><b>executive pay<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> saw the greatest growth, increasing 122 percent since 2018 to $2.2 trillion, as shown in <\/span><b>Figure E<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> However, <\/span><b>climate change <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">remains the most important specific ESG issue considered by money managers in asset weighted terms.
