{"id":26550,"date":"2019-10-28T12:42:06","date_gmt":"2019-10-28T16:42:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/test.greenmoney.com\/2025\/?p=26550"},"modified":"2020-01-03T14:33:30","modified_gmt":"2020-01-03T19:33:30","slug":"esg-2-0-acore-on-renewable-energy-use-and-investments","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/test.greenmoney.com\/2025\/esg-2-0-acore-on-renewable-energy-use-and-investments\/","title":{"rendered":"ESG 2.0: ACORE on Renewable Energy Use and Investments"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"landing-links\"><a href=\"https:\/\/test.greenmoney.com\/2025\/november-issue-2019\/\"> &gt;&gt; Back to November 2019<\/a><\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-26634\" src=\"https:\/\/test.greenmoney.com\/2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ESG-2.0-ACORE-cover.jpg\" alt=\"ESG 2.0 ACORE cover-GreenMoney\" width=\"500\" height=\"643\" srcset=\"https:\/\/test.greenmoney.com\/2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ESG-2.0-ACORE-cover.jpg 668w, https:\/\/test.greenmoney.com\/2025\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/ESG-2.0-ACORE-cover-233x300.jpg 233w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/>In a new white paper released recently, the American Council on Renewable Energy (ACORE) explores the current state of Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) investing in the U.S. and provides recommendations for ESG methodologies that better reflect renewable energy use and investment.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cESG scoring today does not sufficiently reflect investment in, and deployment of, renewable power, which is an indispensable part of the climate solution and a critical barometer of carbon emissions,\u201d<\/em> said ACORE President and CEO Gregory Wetstone. <em>\u201cTo accurately measure the climate impact of ESG investments, a more transparent, standardized, material and forward-looking approach is needed.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>The paper, <a href=\"https:\/\/acore.org\/esg-2-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>ESG 2.0: How to Improve ESG Scoring to Better Reflect Renewable Energy Use and Investment<\/strong><\/a>, outlines how a fragmented marketplace, a lack of transparency in rating methodologies and a failure to focus on truly material information can lead to \u201csustainability\u201d investments that do not necessarily drive renewable energy deployment or lower greenhouse gas emissions.<\/p>\n<p><!-- \/212189234\/inarticle --><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cInvestors and issuers alike find it difficult to navigate inconsistent and incomplete ESG data, which underscores the need for agreed upon reporting standards,\u201d <\/em>said David Giordano, ACORE Board Chairman and Global Head of Renewable Power at BlackRock. <em>\u201cAs BlackRock continues to grow the range of sustainable investing solutions that we offer, including in renewable power, we recognize the importance of increased transparency and reporting on material ESG factors so that investors can better understand the environmental risks and opportunities associated with their investments as well as the climate-related impact of their capital.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>ESG 2.0<\/strong>: How to Improve ESG Scoring to Better Reflect Renewable Energy Use and Investment includes the following recommendations:<\/p>\n<div id='div-gpt-ad-1622053269469-0' class=\"ad-float-left\" style=\"margin-bottom: 10px !important;\"><script>\ngoogletag.cmd.push(function() { googletag.display('div-gpt-ad-1622053269469-0'); });\n<\/script><\/div>\n<p><strong>\u2022 Enhance Renewable Energy Disclosure in Scope 1-3 Emissions<\/strong>. The extent to which companies drive additionality through their methods of renewable energy procurement, i.e., whether they add new renewable generation to the grid, should be more accurately captured in companies\u2019 Scope 1-3 emissions reporting for their ESG scores.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 Provide Credit for Avoided Emissions<\/strong>. Capital providers should receive credit for avoided GHG emissions attributable to their investment decisions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 Implement Standardized, Material and Forward-Looking Data Reporting<\/strong>. To provide meaningful comparisons, ESG scoring should increasingly rely on widely agreed upon data inputs. In order to be impactful, ESG scoring based on that widely agreed upon data should include forward-looking analysis capable of holding rated companies accountable for progress over time.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 Adopt a Universal Climate Benchmark<\/strong>. ESG scoring should help accelerate the transition to a decarbonized economy. International initiatives, like the Paris Climate Agreement and U.N.
